Trailer Reviews
OK, so there are hundred of guys out there reviewing movies online and in print, but how about a whole section devoted to the trailers. Let's face it. Sometimes, the trailer is better than the movie. The trailer can get us excited about a movie or turn us off, saying "huh?"
So I figure I will get the jump on all the other critics out there by reviewing the trailers.
Planet of The Apes Trailer *** (These ratings are of course meaningless)
First, let's deal with the question most of us asked ourselves when we heard they were remaking this movie. "Why bother?" I had the same reaction. I happen to be a big fan of the original film franchise. The movies were thoughtful, dark, original and sometimes even funny. They were not all great, but they were all pretty good. (OK, the fifth one kinda sucked big time, but 4 out of five is pretty good). They had a kind of cheesy 1970's B movie feel to them at times and it just worked.
So despite my initial misgivings about the whole idea behind the remake, I am actually quite excited about this movie. The trailer looks great. Tim Burton is directing so we can expect something original and dark, in keeping with the originals. The costumes and make up all look pretty impressive. It appears that this story may play up the Ape Religion/Cult aspect even more heavily than the original.
I have also heard that Charlton Heston will make a cameo as an ape. Plus this movie has Estella Warren in it. She is one of my favorite super models. Can she act? Well, it probably does not matter because if the original movies are any indicator, she won't speak for most or all of the movie.
And I have heard that this is not a straight remake of the original. There will be no Statue of Liberty at the end, and apparently they are not on earth. But the Apes speak English? Hmmm…. Can't wait to see how it is all explained. Plus even though there will be no Statue of Liberty, I am told there will be an equally cool surprise ending.
This is actually one of the few movies I am really looking forward to this summer. If it is successful we may have a whole new franchise on our hands.

Angelina Jolie. Tight clothing. Guns and explosions. Elaborate fight scenes. Female Indiana Jones for the 21st Century. Count me in. If we are lucky, this could be the first ever quality translation of a video game to the big screen. Remember Super Mario Bros., Double Dragon, Street Fighter, and Mortal Kombat? Me neither. (Ok, the first Mortal Kombat was decent, but only as an excuse to show off some elaborate fights and special effects. Does anyone remember the story? Didn't think so.)

If a trailer could hype a movie as well as this trailer could, then this trailer takes the cake. Squaresoft's keynote entrance into mainstream media is well prefaced by the release of their teaser. Guns. Action. Aliens. Romance. Romance between aliens. Stunning graphics and eerily life-like caricatures of people. Who could not want to see this movie? I suppose unimaginative assholes, but I'm sure even they might be swayed. This, by far, puts down all other previously released animated movies that had utilized CGI with promises of more life-like visuals, i.e. coughcoughTitanA.E.cough. Yet, as Fate unerringly has it, this trailer may be too stunning. Just like a Rob Schneider movie trailer, this trailer might just be packed with all the good screenshots and the rest of the movie might as well go to hell. Or maybe I'm just skeptical.
